As you enter Hanover Square, you meet a juxtaposition of bustling city and serene history. The square, built in the 1720s, was surrounded by homes for the London gentry, a quiet, sedate area that is now a hub of commercial activity hidden inside the Georgian building. However, tucked neatly into this space, you will find the elegantly designed Mandarin Oriental Mayfair. This sleek boutique hotel delivers world-class service in a calm, relaxing space.
The sister to the Hype Park flagship, the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair invites you to enjoy the brand’s East-meets-West signature style in a more intimate, design-forward setting. From the sleek architecture by Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners to interior designs by Studio Indigo, you will discover an oasis of calm and sophistication right in the middle of London.
Welcome to The Mandarin Oriental
What makes the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair so intimate and personal? The By Portier team identified several unique aspects of the hotel, including its exclusivity and size. With 50 guest rooms and suites available, each offers a tranquil setting and special touches that make a visit to this hotel truly unique. Primary among these is the highly personalised hospitality service.
On entering through the discreet doorway into the light-filled atrium, a contemporary chic vibe from the elegant decoration, numerous graceful flower arrangements, and the floating green Ming marble staircase engulfs you. Even the staff uniforms are amazing, and you cannot miss the hotel’s bespoke hand-fan designed by Vivienne Westwood. You can’t use the fan, but you can try the peanut-filled replicas at the reception.
The rooms and suites display this brand’s consistent approach to thoughtfulness, some with hand-painted silk wallpaper and a beige and soft green colour palette. Wood panelling and metallic elements bring it all together. With relaxing walk-in showers, bathroom products by Natura Bissé, hi-tech Japanese toilets, bed linen to sink into and lighting that flatters, these are the rooms and suites to relax in.
For more relaxation options, head to the spa, which offers Swiss Perfection products to help you destress and unwind, or take a swim in Mayfair’s longest underground pool, with its subdued lighting adding a subtle ambience.
Eating is also an exceptional affair at the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair with Akira Back’s first Michelin-starred London restaurant. The fusion of Japanese-Korean cuisine in a design-forward setting is a luxurious culinary experience.

For Your Stay at The Mandarin Oriental in Mayfair
We found getting to the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair from the airport an easy affair. We decided to forgo using car transport due to the local radio info about expected traffic delays. Instead, we took the Underground Elizabeth Line to Bond Street Station, only a block away from the hotel—a 45-minute journey from Heathrow.
Once at the hotel, we headed for the pool, which is gorgeous. It is long and narrow, about three people wide. The water looks black, and the walls light up with a display of pod wall lamps that create a tranquil ambience. The adjacent spa offers several different treatments, all designed to relax yet revitalise you. If you have 2 hours to spare, try the Elegance of Mayfair facial.

Make sure you dine at the hotel but do book a reservation for dinner. Akira Back’s restaurant is very popular with non-guests. Our favourite meal, TBH, was breakfast with green hummus, pine nut and mushroom porridge, avocado with yuzu salt and yuzu honey toast. Yuzu is a delightful flavouring, adding a unique citrus taste, lemony tart with mandarin and grapefruit adding sweetness. As a side dish in the evening, we had yuzu-glazed mushrooms, which you have to try.
The hotel has two restaurants. Akira Back showcases the chef’s Korean-American background with Japanese influences. We tried one of the sharing plates for dinner and would have it again. The restaurant is open all day and is a spectacular space to be in. The marble staircase alone is worth a visit.
The Dosa by Akira Back is the second restaurant. We tried the tasting menu for lunch, available on Friday and Saturday. However, it is also available from Tuesday to Saturday for dinner. This area is small and intimate, seating up to 14 guests at a chef’s table, where you can watch your Korean-style lunch preparation.
For eating out, there are many places to try, both British and International cuisine. Mayfair is host to several high-end cafes and Michelin-starred restaurants.
For cafes, we loved the pastries from The Connaught Patisserie. Following a recommendation, we tried what turned out to be a delicious work of art! The Connaught Hound, the cafe’s emblem, is a milk chocolate cake with gianduja mousse, soft hazelnut praline and an exquisite chocolate glaze. Not to be missed.
Queens of Mayfair is also fast becoming our favourite in the area; the artisan coffee is just the right pick-up before or after a busy day.
Of course, we had to try a traditional British pub, and for us, that was The Audley Public House. Tastefully restored and with some interesting contemporary art, it had a relaxing vibe, and we enjoyed lunch in the outdoor seating area.
Some Hidden Gems To Visit While In Mayfair
Get yourself a London Map; digital maps sometimes play up when underground. Talking to the hotel reception was useful; we found the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair’s staff very helpful and knowledgeable.
If you have the time and want to travel around 55 minutes with London transport, then a visit to The Painted Hall in the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, should be on your itinerary. You will need to buy a ticket to enter the hall, but it hasn’t earned its name as the UK’s Sistine Chapel for nothing. Designed by Sir James Thornhill, there is a large expanse of Baroque walls and ceilings, painted from 1707 to 1726, to explore. We took the guided tour and found it well worth the money.

Just steps from the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, you can easily enjoy a wander around some of the charismatic mews streets surrounding the area. Originally built to house horses and carriages of the gentry, Mayfair’s mews portray the fabric of Mayfair’s refinement. Have a wander down residential Hays Mews with charming window boxes. Or head to Brooks Mews with its shops and restaurants.
Mount Street Gardens offer a peaceful spot for quiet time or a picnic on a nice day. If you want to be indoors and enjoy contemporary art, then head to the Gagosian or Halcyon gallery.
