Gems To Visit While In London
The hotel receptionist told us about an intriguing cafe called The Attendant. This cafe is underground and was once a Victorian public loo. Converted after 50 years of disuse and thoroughly cleaned, we are assured. We found it to be deliciously quirky with exceptional coffee, and we are coffee snobs! Do be aware that its popularity means you sometimes have to queue.
Now, we all like a bit of heady abandon, don’t we? And for that, we tried another quintessential Fritzrovia favourite. The quirky, artistic underground Bourne & Hollingsworth Bar, where you can find music, designer cocktails and an atmosphere of that heady abandon.

While some of the streets in Fitzrovia are well known, including Tottenham Court Road, Charlotte Street, Fitzroy Square, Great Portland Street and Great Titchfield Street, we went looking for places we did not know. We found the lovely, well-preserved Fitzrovia Chapel with its stunning architecture not too far from The Newman Hotel.
We also visited the Woolff Gallery, a contemporary art gallery with 3D displays from global artists. We also found the Cartoon Museum fascinating. The art displays are from British cartoonists from the 1750s to today. It’s closed on a Monday, meaning we had to go back on Tuesday, but it was worth it.
Finally, a secret courtyard and a trip to 1950s Hong Kong. It is a place of timeless glamour and decadence, from the Chinese-inspired decor to the Asian food and cocktails. The Dim Sum platters are to die for, taken with a Dragon Old Fashioned.
I could have stayed all night, and it was pretty late when we left. Lucy Wong’s Secret Courtyard, with its all-weather outdoor terrace, is a must-visit hidden gem, and we will certainly be coming back both to The Newman Hotel and the Secret Courtyard. Apparently, we hadn’t tried some of the wellness treatments, and I’m not complaining, as those beds are like sleeping on a cloud! It’s definitely a thumbs up for The Newman Hotel from us.
